Assalamu Alaikum.

This is an urgent appeal on behalf of Sabri Benkahla requesting your support and immediate action. Sabri is an American citizen who was kidnapped and detained by Saudi Secret Police at the behest of the United States in 2003. He was transferred to U.S. custody shortly thereafter and charged with terrorism. Judge Brinkema acquitted him of all charges, finding the evidence insufficient.

After his acquittal, Sabri was forced to testify before a Grand Jury and was questioned by FBI agents repeatedy. The questions revolved around the charges that he was acquitted of. He was later charged with and convicted of perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements. Judge Cacheris sentenced him to over 10 years after applying a “terrorism enhancement,” arguing that he obstructed a terrorism-related investigation.

This is the first time in the history of the legal system that a person convicted of such charges is sentenced to such a long prison term.

Currently, Sabri is held under restrictive and abusive conditions in prison along with other Muslim inmates, who are placed in special units called Communication Management Units. The ACLU is suing the Federal Bureau of Prisons on his behalf for this prison abuse. In addition, Sabri has retained Attorney Johnathan Sheldon to file a petition for habeas corpus on his behalf. The petition must be filed immediately, and Sabri needs our support to pay the necessary legal fees.

Within the next 2-3 weeks, we must collect a minimum of $15,000 for Sabri’s legal fees.

Sabri is detained illegally, and we must show our support for him and for the cause of justice. Together, we can make a difference. Please contribute the maximum that you can afford and help Sabri get the relief that he deserves.
